In his own words: "I am ashamed to say I have had my XK 120 FHC since 1969, drove it for
about 5 years, took the wooden dash and interior out to “restore” it back in
1973, bought a 1938 Delahaye and got very involved with the Classic Car Club
of America. The Jaguar has been moved around in boxes and flat beds since
1973. Sold the Delahayes (bought another one, I had a real sickness for
cars), had a son in college until 2 weeks ago (he graduated) so now I think
I’m ready to do my XK. The engine turns, dropped the pan to remove what at
one time was oil. Bought a master cyl. The engine was very strong when I left
it back in 1973 but hasn’t run since then and I have been advised that the
head must be removed and cleaned up because of the deposits and crud that has
built up in the dome area. Is it going to hurt the engine if I clean out all
of the old oil from the pan and overhead cam covers as well as replacing the
oil filter, detach the fuel line to an independent elec. fuel/tank and start
it up?? I have all kinds of technical manuals and what have you but really
would like to communicate with someone else who has had a similar experience
to give me some good first hand advice. Thanking you in advance. BUT, please
don’t be abusive as my son thinks I really should be “drawn and quartered for
what I did to that car”."
This was the last time I drove with him in the car, it had only been on the road a couple of
times since he had got it running.
